Knowing Your Planning Method and How it Can Help You Succeed!
by Monique Basil-Wright from The Wright Stationery
Did you know that everyone has a particular planning method and the right tools that complement this?
We have a lot of similarities, but we are all different in the way that we process information and plan effectively to get the results that we want. When you try to fit into a method that isn’t right for you, you can get to the end of the day, week, month and year not getting the things done that you need to and wondering where your time went. You can feel busier than ever but still have a load of tasks left on your to-do list! When you know how you need to process information, in what format and how often you need to check this to keep on top of things, you find your planning method!
Your planning tool can be physical like a planner, notebook, notepad, wall planner etc. And a digital tool can be a calendar, notes on your phone and task management apps. For example, Trello, Asana and ClickUp.
What does this have to do with business? In my opinion… SO MUCH!
When you combine your planning method and the planning tool that compliments this – you’ll plan in a way that works for you around your lifestyle. Far more effective for getting your tasks done! Moving your needle further each week towards your goals, not just what you think you should be doing.
Imagine that every time you sat down at your desk; you knew exactly what you needed to get done.
You knew what task and how long they were going to take.
You knew that you were being productive and moving yourself and your business forward, rather than being busy.
You get to the end of the day and are super happy and proud of what you achieved.
That you had a plan and strategy in place to handle any curveball that came your way.
And because you are planning effectively with tangible results, you can’t wait to plan your next day, week, month and year!
Combine the elements!
Something I speak to my clients about all the time is that there are three things you need to plan effectively. Know your why, know your planning method and know your planning tool.
Knowing these three things and putting into practice your planning builds a sturdy foundation that will put you on the path to success in your life and your business. It’s about creating the right blend for you.
It’s easier said than done like many things, so here are a few pointers to get you started.
- Work out your WHY: The reason you will get up on a cold winters day to get your to do’s done. The thing that will drive you forward when you are having a tough day. The thing that will keep you focused when there are so many distractions. What is your mission? What are your goals? What are your aspirations?
- Your planning method: Work out the things you need to keep track of, how you need to view this information and how you will keep it at the forefront of your focus.
- You planning tool: What tool best suits your planning method? Do you need to write it all down to get it out of your head? Do you need to share your plans and to do’s with other people? Is it something that will constantly need updating or once it’s written you are good to go?
This isn’t a task that will be done in one sitting and will take some refining. But once you have figured it out – trust me, it will be worth it! If you get stuck with any of these areas – ask for help!
