Are You Attracting the Right People to Your Website? 3 Key Ways to Do It.
A piece of advice that we give regularly is to make sure you are proactively sending traffic to your website. If you are doing that and you can see through your analytics that you are getting visitors, but you still aren’t getting many people taking action, then this could be for two reasons. Firstly, your website might need improving and secondly, you might not be attracting the right people to your website.
There are three key ways that we send traffic to our website:
- Social media
- Networking
- Through our weekly emails
Attracting the Right People to Your Website Through Social Media
The way we ensure we get the right people coming to our website through our socials is to ensure the message we put out on social media and our brand is consistent with our website and every other touch point we have with people. Consistency is key! We also make sure we are ourselves. Last week I wrote about AI and I genuinely feel having a personal touch and getting your personality and way of working across will attract the right people. Allowing AI to write and send content without even proof reading it won’t!
People often get drawn into copying trends on social media platforms. Using trends on social media can be great to get views and likes but only use them if you think they are going to attract the right people. You don’t want numbers for the sake of numbers.
Attracting the Right People to Your Website Through Networking
Being your self at networking will achieve the same thing as being yourself on socials, it will attract the right people to you and what you do but you have to make sure you are in the right networking groups. This will change over time and I think it’s important you don’t get stuck in a group out of habit or obligation if you know they are no longer right for you or maybe haven’t been right for you from the start.
I belong to some groups that I know are perfect for our business. Every time I go I come away feeling positive about the conversations I’ve had and something meaningful comes out of virtually every meeting, whether that’s a new member, an introduction to someone else or a request to do an interview or deliver a guest expert session to their audience.
In contrast, I went to one group and after two meetings I knew it wasn’t right for me. The group leaders didn’t follow up with things when they said they would, most of the business owners in there didn’t have a vision or an approach to business that was in line with what we do and so I politely left. Networking group owners shouldn’t mind this because if the group wasn’t right for me, I wasn’t right for them and so it works for both parties.
Send People to Your Website Through Your Weekly Emails
The people who are on our email list have probably already come through our website. They have already signed up for something and expressed an interest in what we do and so, if our messaging is right then we already know they are the right people to be sending back to our website again to keep nurturing the relationship with them.
Having said this, people change! And you don’t want people who have become the wrong people hanging around on your email list. So, if people unsubscribe that’s not a bad thing.
We spoke to one of our business friends recently and he asked us whether we cry when people leave our email list, because he does. Now, he was being a bit tongue in cheek when he said this, he doesn’t actually cry but he really doesn’t like seeing unsubscribes. He questions why and what he’s done wrong. Now this is a man who is brilliant at putting his personality into his business and so it probably does feel more personal to him but at the end of the day it’s business.
Your email list isn’t a list of people to invite to a party, this is a list of people who you want to buy from you or potentially buy from you again or at the very least recommend you to others. If they aren’t going to do that then you don’t want them there.
By speaking just to the right people through your email list, and you will only do this if the wrong people unsubscribe, you can get a better idea of the content that’s working and isn’t. We have people unsubscribing from our list virtually every week but we also add people every week so it’s all good.
Moving Forward
Once you’ve ditched the networking groups that aren’t working; ensured your social media is giving the right message and showing your personal touch and you’re writing amazing emails that are being received by the right people then you know you’re going to be attracting the right people to your website. If at that point you still aren’t seeing your website working as well for you as you would like, then it’s time to review your website content and structure to make it work better for you.
