5 Things You Need to Provide for Someone to Build Your Website for You
Some people seem to think that if they get someone to build their website for them it will all magically happen without them having any input but that’s not how it works. If we are going to build your website for you we will need the following things and we know other good web designers or developers will need the same.
What you will need to provide for someone build your website for you:
1. Your Branding
Hopefully you will have had your brand created professionally so you will have clear brand guidelines for the use of fonts and colours and your logo in formats that work well for web.
If you don’t have this then that’s not a problem. Often web designers will also offer brand design services or have someone they recommend or a partner who can work with you on this before you kick of the website project.
2. Your Content
It’s always best when a business provides us with the content they want on their website at that start of the project as this will inform the layout of each page.
If you don’t have your content ready and you’d like the content created for you by a copywriter you still need to be part of the process. This tends to start with a call or meeting so the copywriter understands your business, what you want to achieve through your website and they might ask for past content you’ve used, all so they can get a full picture of your business and your tone of voice.
Then as the copywriter starts work they will need contact with you to get feedback on what they’ve written so they can get it just right. So you need to be available to give this feedback by agreed dates so the project can run smoothly. Then once the copywriter hands to content to the web designer they can get started.
3. Images
Your website needs to be visually appealing and quite often this is achieved through fantastic brand photos, product shots or maybe some icons or illustrations on your website depending on the nature of your business.
Unless creation of these images is included in the project they need to be provided by you but we are always more than happy to recommend photographers and illustrators who we know do a fantastic job and give you guidelines on the size and layout of images that will work well on your website so you get the best results.
4. Feedback
Just like with the copywriting, throughout the process you will be needed to respond in a timely manner to provide feedback on the website. This is crucial when you are getting someone to build your website for you to ensure the project runs smoothly. A good web designer or developer will give you dates throughout the project of when they will be sending their progress to you to feedback on.
We tend to start with creating a homepage design to make sure we have created the overall look and feel you are happy with and then once you have approved that we move on with the rest of the website.
And then once it’s all done we need your thumbs up to sign off the project and start putting it live.
5. Details to Get Your Website Live
You will need to provide details of your domain name and where your current website is hosted, if you have one, so that it’s a seamless process from your old website being taken down and your new one going live. Good web designers and developers or web platforms will be happy to liaise with your new web team to provide all these details if they have been in control of this for you but we do always recommend you own your domain name as it’s crucial to your business, especially if your emails are linked to it and we aren’t the only people who give this advice. It’s good practice in the industry.
Now you know what you need to provide for someone to build your website for you.
So even if you’re thinking, “That’s ok, I’ve got someone to build my website for me, I don’t need to think about that”, you do still need to be part of the process but you don’t need to worry about all the techy stuff.
