3 Tips to Make Your Website Stand Out Amongst a Load of Tabs
We all want our website to stand out. We want people to remember it and come back again and again until they’re ready to buy or work with us. But how do you make your website stand out when people tend to be like me and have lot of browser windows open, creating a sea of tabs along the top of the screen?
Well, this is my first tip…
Don’t make your favicon blue.
Now you might be wondering what a favicon is? It’s the little icon or logo that appears next to your website name in the browser tab. Or in my case, with the number of tabs I have open, I just see the favicon as you can see from the image below. Yes, I know!! But they’re all open for a reason. Honestly!

So now you know what a favicon is, as I said, don’t make it blue. Especially a mid blue. It’s overused.
The other day I wanted to open FreeAgent and clicked on Kit instead and then I realised that in my open tabs at the time, the following websites all had a similar shade of blue favicon:
Google Docs
FreeAgent
Kit
LinkedIn
Facebook
Calendly
Then I realised that Capsules’s purple wasn’t far off some of the blues in shade which was also similar to Stripe and Apple Podcasts.
So, make sure you choose a colour for your favicon that represents your brand but also stands out.
My next tip is…
Don’t add too much detail to your favicon.
Too much detail makes it indistinguishable and so it doesn’t create a connection in someone’s mind between what they’re seeing and you and so they don’t remember that they’ve got your website open.
When this happens if someone accidentally closes the tab with your website in, they don’t remember what was there and so they don’t go and reopen it.
And my final tip…
Make sure you add a favicon.
If you don’t add a favicon to your website then it’s likely to be your website provider’s favicon that appears, giving them a nice bit of advertising or the generic globe icon like the one in the image below.

Not paying attention to these little details not only stops your website from standing out but some potential customers and clients will pick up on these little details. They matter to some people and so doing everything you can to make a good impression and to stay in their mind is important.
So, now you’ve got your favicon standing out and reminding people about you…
